Improvements Over the Previous Generation

The previous generation of our Yuan Dao received valuable feedback from users, particularly regarding loose fittings, a slippery grip, and excessive weight. Each of these areas has been specifically addressed in this new generation.

1. Improved Scabbard & Fitting Security

The previous ebony scabbard could shrink as temperature and humidity changed, occasionally causing the scabbard fittings to loosen.

For this generation, we switched to a lacquered scabbard with an acacia-wood core. Acacia offers high strength and relatively low shrinkage, while the lacquered exterior provides additional environmental protection.

The fittings are secured using 901 adhesive formulated for strong bonding between brass and lacquered surfaces, then further reinforced with small brass pins for long-term reliability.

2. Genuine Soft-Cured Rayskin Grip

An unfinished wooden handle can become slippery when the hand begins to sweat. Because the crossguard and brass mekugi arrangement make conventional cord wrapping less suitable for this design, we chose genuine soft-cured rayskin instead.

The rayskin provides excellent traction without feeling abrasive against the hand and remains comfortable during extended handling.

3. Significantly Reduced Weight

The new generation has been reduced to approximately 740 g (1.63 lb), bringing it much closer to the weight range of historical examples.

The result is a noticeably faster and more responsive one-handed dao that remains comfortable and easy to control without sacrificing cutting authority.

Precision Die-Cast Brass Fittings	The brass fittings are produced using steel molds for greater dimensional accuracy, crisp detailing, and structural strength. Compared with many lost-wax cast fittings, they resist deformation while maintaining sharper, cleaner details.
